A body butter is one of the more complicated things to make with essential oils. But they are also quite rewarding to have a jar of homemade body butter that meets your specific needs. And though I say “complicated” it’s really quite simple if you follow the base ideas below and choose a combination of oils that suits you. A body butter can help release physical tension while also promoting rest and relaxation. Perfect for a great night of sleep.
Regular Body Butter Base
- ½ cup shea butter
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- ¼ cup sweet almond oil
- Optional 1 tablespoon magnesium oil
- 15-20 drops essential oils
Using a double boiler method, melt and stir the shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil until liquid. Remove from heat and pour into glass jar. Add essential oils and mix. Allow to cool in the fridge.
Whipped Body Butter Base
- ¼ cup shea butter
- ¼ cup cocoa butter
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- ¼ cup sweet almond oil
- Optional 1 tablespoon magnesium oil
- 15-20 drops essential oil
Using a double boiler method, melt and stir the shea butter, cocoa oil, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil until liquid. Remove from heat and pour into glass jar. Add essential oils and mix. Allow to cool in the fridge until it’s starting to harden but still soft around edges. Use a hand mixer to mix until fluffy.

- 15 drops Lavender
- 12 drops Lavender and 5 drops Cedarwood
- 12 drops Lavender and 5 drops Ylang Ylang
- 5 drops Lavender, 5 drops Frankincense, and 5 drops Cedarwood
